Residents across Simcoe County are being invited to share their concerns and priorities about the future of local water resources through an upcoming virtual town hall.
Waterline: A Discussion on Water Security will take place Wednesday, October 21st, at 7:00 p.m. The event aims to gather residents’ experiences, concerns and hopes for the future of water in their communities.
The initiative comes as the federal government seeks public input on water security in Canada and ahead of Ontario’s municipal election.
It will be hosted by the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition in partnership with the Ontario Headwaters Institute, Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition and the Canadian Museum of Water.
Residents can register here.
Those unable to attend can still participate by leaving a voicemail on the Waterline at 705-242-6642, sharing their experiences, concerns, and hopes for the future of water.
The Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition says feedback gathered through the town hall and voicemail messages will be reviewed to identify common themes and priorities across the region.
The organization plans to summarize the input and submit it to the federal government’s water security consultation, which closes Sunday, October 25th. The findings will also help bring local perspectives into future municipal, provincial and federal discussions about water.
With the town hall taking place shortly before Ontario’s municipal election, municipal candidates are welcome to attend as community members and listen to residents’ concerns. However, the event is not a campaign event, and candidates cannot campaign, make speeches or promote their candidacy.
The coalition’s broader Community Leaders for a Sustainable Simcoe initiative has encouraged candidates to consider how municipal decisions affect people, communities, prosperity and issues such as water. More than 75 candidates have signed the initiative’s pledge.
Through Waterline, organizers hope residents will identify the water-related issues that matter to them and bring those priorities into conversations with municipal candidates and their own voting decisions.
