The Town of Innisfil has officially proclaimed Wednesday, September 30th as The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Here is the official proclamation issued by the municipality:
“Whereas the Government of Canada has designated September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in response to Call to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, to recognize the profound harm and intergenerational trauma caused by the Residential School System in Canada; and
“Whereas September 30 is also widely recognized as Orange Shirt Day, a day to honour the Indigenous children who never returned home, recognize the resilience, strength, and dignity of Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities; and reaffirm that Every Child matters; and
“Whereas Indigenous communities across Canada continue to lead efforts to uncover the truth of the residential school system, honour missing children, support Survivors and their families, and advance healing according to their own laws, traditions, and priorities; and
“Whereas acknowledging the ongoing legacy and lasting impacts of the residential school system is essential to advancing truth, understanding, healing, and reconciliation; and
“Whereas the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission provide important guidance for individuals, communities, and all levels of government in the ongoing pursuit of healing, mutual respect, and meaningful reconciliation; and
“Whereas the Town of Innisfil affirms its commitment to strengthening respectful relationships with the Williams Treaties First Nations, responding meaningfully to the Calls to Action that relate to municipalities, supporting local initiatives that advance reconciliation in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, and fostering relationships built on respect, understanding, and collaboration.
“Now Therefore, I, Mayor Lynn Dollin, on behalf of the Corporation of the Town of Innisfil, hereby proclaim September 30, 2026 to be National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in the Town of Innisfil.”
The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is also observing today as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Town offices are closed for the day and will reopen on Thursday, October 1st.
In New Tecumseth, Town Staff will be marking the day with initiatives focused on education, reflection, and understanding.
